Mot's Useless Card Review #88: Remodulation

urSee prev. 'useless' reviewSee next 'useless' review

Continuing the look at cards with official errata, this week in "useless":

In this case the errata has corrected the first function to "Nullifies Adapt: Modulate Shields."

Well, regardless of what Remodulation is supposed to nullify, it has always held some unharnessed potential in its second function. Players who have experimented with the Bajoran affiliation have probably learned the value of a card like Renewal Scroll. There are definitely "early game", "mid-game", and "late game" cards, and Renewal Scroll is a strong way to make certain you get the right cards at the right time. Remodulation isn't quite as strong, but it is accessible to all affiliations, and being an interrupt, will not cost you your card play.

Remodulation is also great for purging unneeded "counter" cards. With the rise of Treaty decks, some players have begun to consider stocking The Devil in their draw deck. Other popular trends have brought other cards along as means of protection: Bajoran Wormhole against Gamma Quadrant decks, Alternate Universe Door against Temporal Rift decks, Hugh for Rogue Borg Mercenaries slaughter-fests, Intermix Ratio for dilemma point-grabbers and Colony decks... and still many more. But often the cards that will shut down one strategy cold do nothing against most others. Remodulation comes in handy, letting you dump unneeded counters - and more importantly, giving you a shot at getting a counter you might need against your current opponent.

But the real power of Remodulation kicks in if you know exactly what you're discarding for, when you know what cards are on the bottom of your deck. In short, this card has Process Ore written all over it. Worried about discarding something valuable when you Process Ore at the beginning of your turn? Well don't... as soon as you Process it back to the bottom of your draw deck, you can use Remodulation to take it right back into your hand. And the Remodulation interrupts you use will also Process back into your deck. Sprinkle your deck with them, and you'll have quick, continued, and repeated access to valuable cards. Opponent slaughtering you with Kevin Uxbridge and Amanda Rogers? Process and Remodulate the same Oof! back to your hand as often as you need it. You can also get aggressive, holding your opponent at bay forever with only a handful of Rogue Borg Mercenaries. (Good thing there's Intruder Force Field!) Of course, you could fight back against waves of unending interrupts by Processing and Remodulating the same couple Goddess of Empathys as often as you need them.

Who better than the Cardassians to deal off the bottom of the deck? :-)
