Mot's Useless Card Review #35: Data (FC) Laughing

urSee prev. 'useless' reviewSee next 'useless' review

This, the first premium card, has three uses:

  1. You can nullify the Calamarain. Well, this isn't bad, considering it's immune to Kevin Uxbridge - the only other ways to get rid of a Calamarain are Immortal Again (for which a Mortal Q must be in play), or Transfigurations. Still, it requires the opponent be using a Calamarain. Right now, I'm not seeing that. (Gee, that one isn't less-than-useful, is it?)
  2. Retake a ship controlled by Lore and the Rogue Borg to follow your commands. Also cool, but I see Lore Returns used even less than the Calamarain. (Perhaps another less-than-useful card?)
  3. Doubles Data’s Head this turn. This is what you are most likely to use Data's Head for. Data (Prem)'s Laughing Head (a disturbing image, to be sure) has a CUNNING of 20, Computer Skill x2, and adds 4 to the RANGE, WEAPONS, and SHIELDS of a ship. With a Plasmadyne Relay or two aboard an Enterprise (Future or regular), IKC Fek'lhr, or a Decius, and you're talking some serious range, no Kurlan Naiskos required...

Although, if you want to use Kurlan Naiskos, twelve extra points in each ship stat (4 x 3) from Data's Laughing Head is nothing to sneeze at. That turns any of the above ships into a Cytherians-scoring menace even without Lakanta, or turns the Husnock Ship or Edo Vessel into attack vessels even the Borg Ship would have to fear. In fact, two Bynar's Weapon Enhancement, Data's Laughing Head, and a Kurlan Naiskos aboard either ship (or Future Enterprise if you're playing with one), totals to enough weapons to take out a Borg Ship in one shot with a WEAPONS exceeding 48. Worth including in the popular Borg-hunting decks right now.

Too bad it's an interrupt, and only works for one turn... so how about a Tijuana Crass? Stock several of these in your Q-Continuum to ensure one comes up on the first mission your opponent attempts. Once the unnullifiable-by-any-means Tijuana Crass enters play, your Data Laughings become events that can be played on the table. That means Data's Laughing Head is now the centerpiece of your Borg-hunting, outpost-destroying attack deck, striking fear into the hearts of your victims with its maniacal cackle!!! That's cool! ;-)
